METRO MANILA, Philippines, 15 June 2026. Maynilad Water Services Inc. has awarded Acuriant Technologies, Inc. the Phase 1 of a 100 million liters per day (MLD) ceramic ultrafiltration retrofit program at the Putatan Water Treatment Plant 1 (PWTP-1). Phase 1 covers 50 MLD, with a second phase expected later in 2026. The full program will replace the plant's existing polymeric ultrafiltration train with Acuriant's Nanostone ceramic UF technology, treating raw water from Laguna de Bay, one of Metro Manila's most operationally challenging surface water sources.

Ceramic UF, built for challenging water

Acuriant's Nanostone ceramic ultrafiltration platform is engineered for water applications where feed conditions are most variable and demanding. Ceramic membranes hold treatment output through high solids loading and challenging feed quality, tolerate aggressive chemical and mechanical cleaning regimes without degradation, and restore full permeability after each clean. The platform also packs high treatment capacity into a compact footprint, an advantage on retrofits like Putatan where new equipment must fit within the existing plant envelope.

Pilot through full-scale proof

Acuriant's involvement at PWTP-1 began with a pilot demonstration in November 2023. The pilot evaluated ceramic UF performance against Laguna Lake water under both design and off-design conditions. Stable operation across that variability led Maynilad to commission a 20 MLD full-scale ceramic UF facility, which was inaugurated in 2024 and has been operating at full designed capacity since December 2024.

The 20 MLD system was designed to treat the highly variable raw water conditions of Laguna Lake. In actual operations, it has continued to perform even during periods when turbidity levels significantly exceeded the facility’s original design basis, including during extreme weather events. Throughout these periods, the ceramic UF system continued to produce water that met potable drinking water standards.

First water by end of 2026

First water from Phase 1 is scheduled for the end of December 2026, with full Phase 1 capacity targeted for March 2027. The full 100 MLD retrofit, across both phases, is targeted for mid-2027.

“The Putatan project reflects the strength of the partnership that has developed between Maynilad and Acuriant over the past several years,” said Juergen von Hollen, Chief Executive Officer of Acuriant Technologies, Inc. “The pilot program and subsequent 20 MLD facility provided a strong foundation for this decision and enabled both teams to evaluate ceramic ultrafiltration under actual operating conditions at PWTP-1. We are grateful for Maynilad’s confidence in our team and look forward to working together on the successful delivery of this next phase.”
